Hold the brush comfortably in your hand (many toothbrushes have a pad on which to rest your thumb, which helps hold the brush properly). Aim at the point where the teeth meet the gum, holding the brush at a 45% angle, and apply pressure equivalent to the weight of an orange. If you press too hard you can cause damage to our gums and possibly wear them away.

1.	Brush outer surfaces of lower teeth. Move horizontally across the teeth. Aim at bottom of teeth.
2.	Brush inner surface of lower teeth horizontally across teeth.
3.	Brush biting surface of lower teeth.
4.	Brush outer surfaces of upper teeth. Move horizontally across the teeth. Aim at top of teeth.
5.	Brush inner surface of upper teeth horizontally across teeth.
6.	Brush biting surface of upper teeth.

Electric toothbrushing requires a modified technique. An electric toothbrush with a small, preferably round head, is used to clean each individual tooth by holding the brush against the outside, inside and top of the tooth for five seconds. Make sure the brush is half on the gum and half on the tooth and press gently whilst the head is vibrating.
